MMU Students Advance to Global Finals of Huawei ICT Competition

Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has achieved a major milestone in technology and innovation, as its AgriChain Team emerged winners of the Regional Innovation Track at the Huawei ICT Competition 2025–2026.

The victory earns the Ugandan team a spot at the global finals scheduled to take place in Shenzhen from June 2nd to 5th, 2026.

The team, composed of Elvis Okoo, Atibu Wasswa, and Aaron Masendi under the guidance of Alinaitwe Mukonyezi, impressed judges with AgriChain, an artificial intelligence-powered solution designed to transform agriculture. Built using MindSpore, the innovation focuses on improving efficiency, transparency, and productivity across agricultural value chains, offering practical solutions to challenges faced by farmers in Africa and beyond.

The team’s journey to the global stage was highly competitive. After progressing through preliminary rounds in December 2025, they excelled in the national finals in January 2026 before outperforming teams from 21 Sub-Saharan African countries during the regional finals held in Kampala on March 5th, 2026.

Speaking on the achievement, Ronnie Akantorana Arinda, Public Relations Manager at Huawei Technologies Uganda, applauded MMU for nurturing competitive talent.

“Seeing the students excel on such a competitive stage is a testament to the high standard of education, mentorship, and technical training provided by Mountains of the Moon University. Achievements like this bring great pride to the academic community and serve as an inspiration to fellow students. We look forward to supporting them as they progress to the global stage,” Arinda said.

The Vice Chancellor of MMU, Pius Coxwell Achanga, also commended the team, describing the victory as a proud moment for both the university and the country.

“I warmly congratulate our Innovations Team for emerging winners at the regional level and qualifying for the global finals. This initiative provides a vital platform for talent cultivation, enabling our students to enhance their digital skills and compete at the highest level. We are proud to see MMU and Uganda represented on the global stage,” Achanga said.

Team member Aaron Masendi expressed gratitude for the opportunity, highlighting the competition’s impact on their technical and problem-solving skills.

“We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to participate in this competition. It has provided a powerful platform for advancing agriculture-technology innovation while strengthening the role of youth and education in solving real-world challenges. Competing at this level has not only enhanced our technical capabilities but also reinforced our commitment to developing solutions that can transform agriculture in Africa,” Masendi said.

Launched in 2015, the Huawei ICT Competition brings together students from over 2,000 universities in more than 100 countries.

Recognized as a flagship programme of the UNESCO Global Skills Academy, it focuses on building skills in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and networking.

The success of the AgriChain Team not only marks a milestone for Mountains of the Moon University but also highlights the growing role of African institutions in driving innovation, with Uganda emerging as a hub for technology-driven agricultural solutions.
